Open Design Italia

Federica Bubani

Over 80 designers will participate in the third edition of Open Design Italia 2012: the contest/exhibition/market that will connect local designers, companies and makers. The event will take place in Venice from November 23rd to 25th.

About 70 projects were selected for the exhibition, out of 208 applications received over the last months from Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Slovenia, Israel, Brazil, Argentina, Egypt and Hong Kong.
The work of selected designers shows how self-production does not only mean self-prototyping or bricolage. Their objective is to focus on new planning models and alternative productive chains, with a strong emphasis on manual labour. It's not only the work of individuals in their own laboratories, but it also stems from networks and communities of professionals, designers, craftsmen and subcontractors creating objects with a strong narrative value.

Projects will be evaluated by a multidisciplinary international Jury: Aldo Cibic, Paolo Ulian, Stefano Micelli, Jörg Sürmann, Michele Capuani, Alessandro Molinari, Marco Zito and Corrado Facco.
A rich schedule of cultural initiatives will allow visitors to deepen the topic of self-production through the participation in debates, round tables and exhibitions with renowed international figures.
Open Design Italia will be held in Venice as part of Venezia 2019 - European Culture Forum. It will be held in one of the most symbolic locations of the new Venice: Magazzini Ligabue area.

I found very interesting the work of some of the designers.
Federica Bubani (born in Faenza in 1981), a graduate in ceramics, in 2003 opened her own atelier-shop where she produces and sells ceramic works and other objects. Many among her lamps and objects reveal an unusual use of the material and of its monochrome and detailed textures, often opposed to raw materials such as wood. She joined various trade exhibitions and in 2011, after taking a year off, she came back with a new artistic language and design technique.

Raffaella Brunzin has been collaborating with the BA in Fashion Design at IUAV University Venice since 2006, combining teaching with her work as an independent designer. In addition to researching in the field of self-production, she is involved in social design initiatives such as the project “Design in gabbia”, promoted by the cooperative Rio Terà dei Pensieri in support of prisoners. Gaetano di Gregorio lives and works in Venice as an architect, ceramist and designer. In 2003 he founded the cultural association Spiazzi, which is actively involved in Venice in the field of visual arts and design. He exhibited his works in Milan and abroad and he is particularly focused on smallseries design. They'll present Elastable: an interesting plywood table.

Brunzin + di Gregorio
A small brand founded in Padua in 2008 by three young friends: Andrea, Luca and Federico – hence the acronym ALF. Andrea is a student in engineering, Luca is an architect and Federico is studying architecture. Their idea is to give new life to discarded materials thus giving rise to unique objects. ALF created belts and bags and participated in competitions and events in fashion design.
