She explores the life of products and raw materials. With her designs Christien Meindertsma aims to regain understanding of processes that have become so distant in industrialization. Her work is clever, engaging, even sentimental, and forces us to question the way in which we interact with our physical surroundings. She is interested in “the products we consume and the materials they are made of”. Her work has been exhibited in MOMA (New York), The V&A (London) and the Cooper Hewitt Design museum (New York).

URCHIN POUF

Urchin-shaped pouf stools handmade (by her). She knitted New Zealand wool, a material she is fascinated with and intimately understands, and used enormous broomsticks to knit each pouf over the course of six weeks.

Pouf lavorato ad uncinetto, realizzato a mano (da lei). Ha lavorato a maglia la lana della Nuova Zelanda, un materiale che da cui è affascinata, con degli enormi ferri. Per realizzare ogni pouf ha impiegato sei settimane.

TEXEL OTTOMAN

This is an unconventional way to prop up your feet – on top of large ottoman spun out of 100 per cent Dutch wool. Her inspiration came from seeing an old ball-winding machine at the textiles museum in Tilburg. She had already created the Urchin Pouf ottoman, and wanted to make another footrest from only wool.

Questo è un modo non convenzionale di appoggiare i piedi - sulla parte superiore del grande pouf fatto al 100 per cento di lana olandese. La designer ha avuto l’ispirazione osservando una vecchia macchina avvolgitrice al museo tessile di Tilburg. Aveva già creato l’Urchin Pouf, e voleva fare un poggiapiedi di sola lana.

OAK INSIDE

This collection offers eight contemporary reinterpretations of centuries-old tradition of artisan Hindeloopen, specialized in painted furniture since 1800. By combining old techniques with a new way of looking at the decoration, Christien has developed a table, a chair, with unmistakable wool seat, a painted and decorated sideboard and a rug. The choice to use only 100% natural color is in the tradition of his work.

Con questa collezione propone otto rivisitazioni contemporanee della centenaria tradizione dell'azienda artigiana Hindeloopen, specializzata dal 1800 in mobili decorati. Combinando antiche tecniche artigianali con un nuovo modo di guardare alla decorazione, Christien ha messo a punto un tavolo, una sedia dall'inconfondibile seduta in lana, una credenza laccata e decorata e un tappeto. Anche la scelta di usare soltanto colori naturali al 100% si inserisce nella tradizione del suo lavoro.
