FRAME MOOOI AWARD

Frame and Moooi are both leaders in the design industry; glossy pages of Frame magazine focus on cutting-edge interiors, while Moooi strives to create spectacular furnishings and lighting. Combining the interests of both organizations, the Frame Moooi Award was launched to target interior designers and architects who custom created a lamp or furnishing for a specific interior. There’s just one condition: these must be products that can lead a life outside the interior for which they were designed.

The juror for the 2013 competition will be Jana Scholze, Curator of Contemporary Furniture and Product Design at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
As the juror, Scholze will select the top 10 finalists who will be invited to the grand finale party during Milan’s Salone del Mobile in April, 2013. Here the award will culminate at a cocktail event on April 10th, where the grand prize winner will be announced – and walk away with the €25,000 cash prize. Scholze will also be part of a panel discussion and Q&A session on April 11th, where press and public will be invited to ask her about the process of selecting a winner.

What’s unique about the award?
The Frame Moooi Award seeks the world’s best furnishings or lamps that have been custom-designed for a specific interior project. Throughout history many high-profile pieces of furniture and lighting have been designed for a specific context, like Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Chair (created for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona) or Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair (designed in 1958 for the Radisson SAS Hotel in Copenhagen).

These and many other iconic products eventually experienced large-scale production and were used in a wide range of interior projects. Many proved to be so innovative that they earned recognition and inspired others to design similar models. Contextual designs are clearly important for the development of furniture and lighting; they also strengthen the bond between (interior) architects and product designers.
