A
private foundation planned to restore Fogo’s (Fogo Island,
Newfoundland, Canada) vibrancy and protect its culture with a unique
Arts Residency Program. Saunders Architecture is in charge of building
six artists’ studios.

fondazione privata ha deciso di ripristinare la vitalità di Fogo (Fogo
Island, Newfoundland, Canada) e di proteggere la sua cultura con uno
speciale programma di residenze per artisti. Saunders Architecture si
occupa della costruzione dei sei studi per artisti.

Architecture was founded by the Canadian architect Todd Saunders in
1998. He has lived and worked in Bergen since 1996 and has worked on
cultural and residential projects right across Norway, as well as
England, Denmark, Italy, Sweden and Canada.

studio believes that architecture must play an important role in
creating place, using form, materials and texture to help evoke and
shape memory and human interaction.
La
filosofia dello studio vede l’architettura come protagonista nella
creazione di luoghi, nell’uso delle forme, dei materiali e delle
strutture al fine di evocare e plasmare la memoria e l'interazione tra
gli uomini.

Long
Studio is the first of six artists’ studios on Fogo Island. It is
located near the Newfoundland community of Joe Batt’s Arm hovers on a
series of stilts that lifts the structure above the ground to frame a
view of the North Atlantic Ocean. Similar to local fisherman’s houses,
the studio sits on stilts and is clad in rough-sawn pine and whitewashed
spruce on the interior.

pressi della comunità di Newfoundland of Joe Batt’s Arm ed è sospeso su
una serie di pali che sollevano la struttura da terra per inquadrare la
visuale dell'Oceano Atlantico del nord. Simile alle case dei pescatori
locali, lo studio poggia su palafitte ed è rivestito in pino grezzo
all’esterno e abete rosso imbiancato all'interno.

The
Squish Studio is a compact, trapezium shaped volume augmented by the
extension of the east and west exterior walls to create a sheltered,
triangulated south entry deck and a north terrace that overlooks the
ocean. At night, the studio, illuminated by the soft glow of its
solar-powered lighting, appears as a lighthouse placed strategically on a
rocky cliff to over- look the North Atlantic.

Squish Studio è un volume compatto, a forma di trapezio, ampliato con
l'estensione delle pareti esterne est e ovest, che creano un’entrata
riparata e triangolata a sud e una terrazza che si affaccia sull'oceano a
nord. Di notte, lo studio, illuminato dalla luce soffusa prodotta
dall’energia solare, appare come un faro posizionato strategicamente su
una rupe rocciosa affacciato sull’Atlantico del Nord.

Bridge
Studio has an angled body that projects out towards a lake. It is
dramatically located on a steep hillside overlooking the calm waters of
an inland pond.

spettacolarmente situato su una collina aggettante sulle calme acque di
un laghetto dell’entroterra.

Tower Studio is a small twisted tower situated on a stretch of rocky coastline in Shoal Bay.
The angular and twisting exterior form reveals a singular fenestration which doubles as both a
window and skylight.
Tower Studio è una piccola torre ritorta situata su un tratto di costa rocciosa a Shoal Bay.
La forma esterna angolare e torta rivela una singolare vetrata che funge sia da
finestra, sia da lucernario.
